On May 17th, 2025, Erdoğan announced the discovery of a natural gas reserve in the Black Sea. Located near the Göktepe 3 well, the reserve is estimated to contain 75 billion cubic meters of natural gas, with a projected value of approximately 30 billion dollars. The retrievable gas has the potential to meet national demand for approximately 3.5 years.

This discovery is a significant milestone in creating an energy-independent country, in parallel with other initiatives such as nuclear power plants, solar energy, and more.
The drilling process in the reserve began on March 16 and was completed on March 27, using the specialized Turkish drilling vessel Abdulhamid Han. Erdoğan emphasized his commitment to creating an independent energy industry in Türkiye by stating his unwavering support and ambition: “We will continue on our path without stopping, without resting, and without paying heed to criticism or obstacles until we reach our goal of a fully energy-independent Türkiye.”
Other ongoing gas explorations include the Sakarya Gas Field, which shares the same objectives as the Göktepe 3 mission. The first phase of production has already been completed, yielding 9.5 million cubic meters of natural gas. The collected gas is to be supplied to 4 million households in the near future. Plans for the Sakarya field include doubling production by 2026 and quadrupling it by 2028. Both the Göktepe 3 well and the Sakarya Gas Fields work under the same purpose, yet are distinct exploration sites.
Türkiye is actively pursuing energy independence—a bold strategy, considering that around 90% of its energy consumption currently relies on imports. The discovery and proper execution of these fields to meet people's energy needs is an extensive process, yet it could yield significant advancements for the country in related fields.

Although the discovery marks a potentially significant turning point, critics note a recurring pattern: major energy announcements often coincide with periods of political tension. Such announcements have occurred in the past, often accompanied by widespread media coverage and official speeches emphasizing their national importance. For example, a similarly large discovery was also announced in 2020, conveniently prior the upcoming presidential elections. It was alleged that 320 billion cubic meters worth of gas were found in the Tuna 1 well. That estimate was later revised upward to 405 billion cubic meters. The announcement generated public optimism and political support, yet the actual output failed to match the initial projections.
Even though the gas reserve discovery seems to be promising based on government statements and the country’s aims going forward, there are skepticisms that exist due to past ongoings. If not driven by political motives, this discovery is a promising opportunity and a valuable addition to the country’s future.
